Chongism Vol. 1: Understanding Your Self—
The Power of Beliefs and Unveiling the Concept of God!
Hello!
Welcome to the Chongism Newsletter Vol. 1!
I’m your host, David Chong, and I’d like to thank you for your time and decision to read this newsletter.
Remember to read carefully!
In this newsletter, I will discuss the power of Beliefs and unveil the mystery of God!
Nearly everyone has heard of God, but the biggest turn-off to religion is that you just have to believe. (bleh, not my style)
I’m here to talk about the ‘concept’ of God genuinely.
The one you must know to understand why Religion is such a powerful influence on the world, and how it relates to you and your Self.
Take off the rose-colored glasses of religion and see the spiritual world in real life; I will show you the connection between God and your Self— and how your Self influences the world.
Now let’s begin; you must first understand ‘The Power of your Beliefs.’
The idea for this Newsletter came from a Twitter comment from @torianncheung.
”The idea that what you think/believe can really shape you, your health, even your relationships.”
Brilliant!
What better way to start the Chongism series than at the core of Self—
Without further ado, let’s explore the magical world of
“Beliefs!”
First, Let’s define Belief.
The best definition I found was from the Merriam-Webster Dictionary.
Google comes in second place with,
Let’s take a look at the first definition,
Belief: ”A state or habit of mind in which trust or confidence is placed in some person or thing.”
The word ‘habit’ is critical here because it leads us to the first crucial aspect of your Self. . . .
Your core beliefs guide your decisions and actions.
What you believe in, 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭, is
- how you make decisions, and
- act upon them in life.
For example,
- If you truly believe you’re a healthy person, you’ll make decisions in favor of diet and exercise.
- If you truly believe Jesus is the only son of God, you’d call yourself Catholic or Christian.
- If you truly believe chocolate milk is poisonous, you wouldn’t drink chocolate milk.
You get the point.
We have millions of beliefs inside us, and your unique combination of beliefs causes you to make decisions and act differently than others.
Your core beliefs are also how you judge others.
Look into any great war or minor argument;
and at its core, you will always find a conflict of values and beliefs.
Your beliefs are where you develop your sense of morals, ethics, values, and principles. Your sense of:
- Good and bad
- Right and wrong
- Importance and unimportance
- What is socially accepted and unaccepted
- and everything in between
We use shared, common beliefs to unite and separate nations.
Beliefs unite the world:
- Communities
- Countries
- Cultures
- Families
- Nations
- Friends
- Yourself
These are bodies of people who have like-minded beliefs.
You also have your ‘Self,’ which, in this case, is a collection of your strongest beliefs personified and manifested.
In the eyes of your own beliefs, you are always perfect.
Beliefs also divide the world:
We can use shared, common beliefs to divide and segregate from those who do not hold the same values and beliefs. From differing beliefs come division:
- War
- Fights
- Judgment
- Separation
- Disagreements
- Mutual understandings (Agree to Disagree)
- & External ally (Differing beliefs but supportive)
If it weren’t for the infinite possibilities of beliefs, the world would be as One.
Ok,
.
.
So remember,
What you believe in, 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭, is
- how you make decisions
&
- act upon them in life.
Whether consciously aware of your beliefs or not, your life will be guided in the direction of them.
The key here is that you believe 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭.
“David. You can bold it all you want, but what does that really mean?”
I’m glad you asked.
It’s time I unmasked the concept of God.
Before we continue, I must preface that I am not Christian or dedicate myself to any religious faith. I stay true to myself and my values and do not accept any religious affiliation. However, I do value the lessons taught in religion.
I spent over a decade searching for a true, genuine understanding of God. I have studied various religious texts and philosophies after my own enlightenment and kept finding answers.
I will distill all that I can into these newsletters.
For the intent of this newsletter, I will define what spirituality means in Chongism:
Spirituality is a process of self-discovery from “who you are” to “who you would like to be.”
It is a look into a deeper, richer understanding of yourself, others, and the world around you.
It is the mastery of your Self: your conscious mind and your emotional body.
Never before has information and data been so widespread via the internet; I hope the insights I’ve developed will bring you peace, understanding, and the life you’ve always dreamed of.
It’s time you understand:
Why Religion is such a powerful influence on the world.
Have you ever wondered why religion seems to be such a powerful force in the world?
Of all the things that rule the world, like business, money, and politics, how did this invisible concept of God grow to compare in size, influence, and power?
Well, I’m here to tell you that no matter what religion you go down, you will find one golden thread that connects them all.
It is beliefs— the core of humanity.
Every human is a set of beliefs. Whether you are religious or not.
Beliefs about
- Your Self
- The world
- Other people
- & How life should be
It’s no wonder religion is so widespread. Religion addresses the core of our being. Our beliefs are the fabric of who we are (whether we’re consciously aware of them or not).
Religion also addresses the Self and the universe. Two of the deepest non-tangible concepts of life.
- The Great Within
and - The Great Without
Now, it’s understandable if you’ve never found interest in religion— diving into spirituality is not everyone’s cup of tea, and this invisible God thing isn’t too easily accepted. Even practicing religious people will admit ‘they don’t know; they just believe’.
So then, what is it about religion that gets people interested in the first place?
After meeting many religious people, I found that there are four primary reasons that people follow a religion.
1. You were born into it.
At birth, we are the most vulnerable with our beliefs. We mimic the environment around us and do as everyone else does. We adopt the traditions and faiths we grew up with, even if the traditions and faith seem non-sensical to others.
2. You had unfavorable circumstances in life.
People who have felt guilt, shame, or unfavorable circumstances throughout their life may start looking to religion. It’s easier to accept an ideology when you’re down on your luck and need a supportive community around you. At times, It’s easier to pass the responsibility to “God” than accept it for yourself.
3. You have had extraordinary results in life, and you want to “Thank God” for your blessings.
I’ve met people who were never religious before they worked themselves to great success. Successful people like to attribute their gratitude to a power outside themselves because they know that the seemingly random circumstances in life worked out for them.
4. Community
People will join religious communities more for the ‘people’ than for the ‘faith’. “My friends believe in this, so I will too.” Some communities may even be forced; we’ve fought wars over beliefs. Some countries still kill people that do not align with their country’s faiths. At times you will find a community of beliefs built around fear.
Ok, ok, I may have portrayed religion in a bit of a negative light. Religion also fills a crucial role in a healthy society as well. Such as:
1. Providing stability and unity to a society
It’s a community builder. Religion is an interest. Similar to any hobby or interest that you find yourself captivated in. Many people find themselves in a religious community due to its size, ability to withstand time, and unconditional support. It’s a community that will not go away in many lifetimes.
2. Establishes morals, ethics, and values
Religion sets up a system for ‘how to live life.’ In reality, this life has no rules. So, how can we stop people from evil and selfishness? Give authority to religion. In a world with no rules, it’s important that we live with good morals, ethics, and values: Don’t kill, don’t steal, etc. Religion and spirituality are the prime authority figures that promote a “morally good life.”
3. Provides a greater meaning to life
It gives the community a sense of purpose in life. As you live your life, you may have an existential experience— the classic “who cares, we’re all going to die anyway” mentality. People want meaning in their lives. While some might find themselves picking up new hobbies to engross their attention, a select few look within’ for meaning. Religion and spirituality have answers for those who look within’.
(But also, now you have me. Your tour guide through this messy spirituality stuff)
Now that’s been established, let’s get to the good part.
Let’s talk about God.
Bare with me. I’m not here to preach the word of the Lord and how you should follow his guidance. I’m here to talk about him as a concept and how it relates to your beliefs.
God: The Great Without
Let’s start here since this is the concept of ‘God’ that requires faith. This is the supernatural being in the sky, and usually where skeptics draw the line. No matter which religion or ideology you follow, there will always be a great unknown. Allow me to explain:
No matter how much you plan, you can not predict the future.
There’s a Yiddish proverb that says, “Man plans, God Laughs.”
Well… that’s what people would consider ‘God’. The circumstances and situations that occur in your life that are not planned can be attributed to ‘God’ as the Great unknown.
You could call the ‘future’, God. The people that come into your life and the seemingly random, uncontrollable events that impact your life.
This view of God is abstract. It’s uncertainty. It’s not completely comprehensible. It’s invisible. It’s acknowledging a power outside ourselves that we can never control or completely comprehend.
There will be elements of this in my future newsletters. Topics like, “Karma” and “Manifestation” have elements of the unknown included, and I feel they are important concepts to discuss in the space of spirituality.
You can also consider ‘other people’ as a ‘God without’.
That is because, inside every person, there is—
God: The Great Within’
Understanding the God within’ is far more important than understanding that thing in the sky that controls the universe. This is where you can actually do something about your life and destiny.
Remember what I keep saying?
What you believe in, 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭, is
- how you make decisions
&
- act upon them in life.
Well… here it is.
Your core set of beliefs is your inner God.
Your beliefs influence your actions.
& your actions create the future you manifest.
Change your beliefs, and your actions will gradually change in time.
The reason I keep repeating,
What you believe in, 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭, is because
Subconsciously, your core beliefs are in your heart.
**The energy center of your heart that you can feel right now (middle of your chest, slightly to the left) is where you place your beliefs.
Need proof?
Let’s look at some texts from the religions of the world.
From the Western World of Christ,
Even in ancient times, we knew that our actions stemmed from our hearts. This isn’t a quote about love and romance; it’s saying that our actions are determined by the quality of our hearts— our beliefs.
Same message. Belief in heart → action → results in life.
Here’s more:
You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. – Jeremiah 29:13
- While I’m sure Jeremiah didn’t mean it this way, the beliefs you hold in your heart and the actions you commit to the world will result in the future you truly believed in. Your strongest beliefs will be shown through your actions with confidence.
Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the heart. – Proverbs 21:2
- I said this earlier, “In the eyes of your own beliefs, you are always perfect.” (That does not exclude you from the good and evil that come from the heart)
Walt Disney knew this secret and has a few quotes that reinforce this ideology, as he was a devoted Christian.
Walt knew of the true powers of religion. However, this influence on a person’s life isn’t strictly limited to religion. You are also highly influenced by your family and close group of friends, and how they respond to the ups and downs of life.
And, of course, he was well attuned to his inner God.
”But wide awake, not blind faith, moves me. My operations are based on experience, thoughtful observation, and warm fellowship with my neighbors at home and around the world.”
Walt is saying he’s not motivated by some external God that you have to believe blindly. What moves him are his own godly experiences. (godly in the sense that he’s self-aware of them)
The level at which you develop ‘faith or belief in yourself’ will determine your success in any given endeavor. The level at which you develop ‘faith or belief in yourself’ will determine the direction of your life.
‘Believing in yourself’ manifests as confidence, which is the key to unlocking greater experiences in life. (this is a whole other newsletter in itself)
Old man Disney found the secret of the heart and shared it with the world through his Classics.
Walt romanticized following your heart and your dreams, and it’s very inspirational. However, he did not talk about the dark sides of the heart.
If you haven’t realized by now, the heart is a powerful source of energy within us. It harbors the beliefs that you act in the world. It does not discriminate between good and ill-intentioned beliefs. The heart is a vessel that holds both love and hate.
Similar to believing in ‘yourself’ and ‘your goals’ which produces action equivalent to the belief, people can fall into darkness.
By darkness, I mean consistent feelings of strong negative emotions and values until they become a habit,
Think Anxiety, Fear, Hate, Jealousy, Mistrust, and Anger (on autopilot).
You may find yourself acting your life into a nightmare.
Remember, your core beliefs guide your decisions and therefore your actions.
If you follow your heart into darkness, the actions you take in life will result in more darkness. (Remember, this means if you’re consistently in a cycle of negative emotions)
If you follow your heart towards a noble, grand dream, then your actions will slowly follow suit, and your results will be equivalent to the belief expressed.
If a belief is not planted firmly in the heart, it will not express itself confidently enough to see reality.
In the Eastern world, Taoism further explains the nature of the heart.
I’ll briefly describe a core Taoist principle that must be understood before we start closing things out.
You’ve probably seen this symbol before. It is the Yin and Yang, and it explains a core truth about reality.
Duality exists in all inherent truths.
This means, you cannot have one without its opposite. I’ll give you some examples:
- Hard / Soft
- Hot / Cold
- Love / Hate
- Light / Dark
- Positive / Negative
These two, opposite states are inherently the same but vary in degree and perspective.
That is the concept of Yin and Yang.
With that in mind, this is what Taoists say about the heart:
- The heart houses the “original” spirit.
- They call it the “emperor” organ.
- It is the first organ to develop in the embryo, giving life to the other organs.
- If the heart dies, the other organs cannot live.
The Taoists have found that your organs are vessels for your emotions which can be expressed positively and negatively.
The heart contains the two most powerful emotions in the body; they are expressed as:
- Love, Patience, Compassion, Joy, and Happiness
- Hatred, Impatience, and Cruelty
You can fall under any of these extremes and everything in between.
Have you ever wondered why evil exists in this world?
Because, we, as humans, will commit acts of love or hate in proportion to the amount of emotion expressed.
It’s easier to express negative emotional patterns because we feel negative emotions stronger than positive emotions in terms of getting ourselves to take action.
Think of it like an explosive angry outburst vs. maintaining a loving relationship over time.
Think, “I can’t stand this person, but I love them.”
Hate is the most destructive and most powerful emotion in the human body. It has the power to destroy and at its extreme, even grant the desire to kill, just as love has the power to create, nurture, and grow.
While hate is a stronger feeling than love, hate is temporary and love is forever.
Ok, now it’s time to end this already lengthy newsletter. If you’ve made it to this point, I truly appreciate you with all my heart.
Let’s end it with,
Why does knowing any of this matter? (What’s in it for you?)
Now that you have some sort of insight into the truths of God, I hope you are ready to take complete control and responsibility over your own life.
If you’ve forgotten the overall message of this letter, it is to say this:
Your strongest beliefs dictate how you act in this world and the results you create for yourself in the future.
It starts with:
- Beliefs (the stronger they are, the more confident you become about them)
- Actions (In line with your beliefs in proportion to how strong your beliefs are)
- Results you get in life/ the future
So, what can you do with this?
Satisfy Desire.
If you’re not satisfied with the results of your life now, you must start by changing your beliefs!
So, how do you change your beliefs (if you want to)?
There are two main components to a belief:
- The clarity of your vision created in your imagination
- The emotional energy behind the belief
Every religion from east to west has found a common secret exercised in practices even today.
In the West, they call it prayer.
In the East, they call them chants or mantras.
For the non-religious, they call it affirmations.
They are all emotionally charged ideas that are repeated consistently over a long period of time.
For now, let’s call them affirmations.
Affirmations are statements about how you think, feel, and see your Self in your mind.
For example, statements like,
I am smart.
I am kind.
I am healthy.
are all statements about your Self whether you believe they are true or not.
This leads us to the first exercise:
Building Your Ideal Self: Create your own Destiny
Ask yourself these two questions:
- What qualities do you see in your ideal self?
This establishes who you want to “be”. If you want to be rich, your ideal self is not lazy and apathetic.
Find qualities of the type of person you want to become by finding a person to model that has achieved the success you wish to achieve.
Highly recommend good, positive qualities, but everyone is different.
2. What do you want?
Write down everything you want on paper. It’s important to see your desires on paper in real life and out of your mind. Everything from how you want to feel (like happiness) to the materialistic rewards in life.
Once you have your answers written out, you are gaining clarity in:
- The type of person you want to become (ex., confident, kind, generous, patient)
- Your ideal lifestyle vision
(do you imagine private jets and mansions or a humble but comfortable lifestyle?)
Your imagination is infinite.
- Choose what you want.
- Discard what you don’t.
It’s that simple. Don’t limit yourself.
If you want to gain more clarity, you can create a vision board of your ideal Self and lifestyle.
Ok, now that we have the conscious, imaginary mind working at full blast, it’s time to add the emotion.
If you don’t put the emotional investment into your new vision of self, your old habits will win out every time.
I want you to imagine that there are two sides of Self.
There is
- Your conscious, thinking mind
- Your animalistic, emotional acting body
These are two distinct, separate parts of yourself.
- What you think, say, and want in your mind
and
- What you do
are in completely different realms until you learn to synchronize them with integrity and honesty. (aka. being true to yourself)
So far, You’ve built the dream vision for your life.
- The type of person you want to become
and
- the materialistic things that you want in life, aka your imagined lifestyle
Now you have to emotionally charge those ideas through Affirmations or mindful visualization.
Affirmations are primarily used by high-profile, successful people in Olympic sports and business. An affirmation’s purpose is to accomplish two things:
- A mental rehearsal (visualization) of the dream achieved
- Incite an emotional response from your body
Your animalistic, emotional body does not understand language or words at all.
It will respond to emotions and pictures. (symbolism)
The affirmations should also put you into a scenario in which you can imagine the outcome achieved.
Here are some rules for creating your own affirmations:
1. Create a list of everything you want and everything you want to be
2. Convert that ‘want list’ into a ‘goal list’
Set goals for money, health, relationships, and things that matter to you!
3. Begin each affirmation with “I am” or “You”
I have found “You” to be much more effective when reciting affirmations to myself, but they are interchangeable.
4. Add an emotional word to each affirmation.
This is typically an adverb which ends in ‘-ly’. (ie. Happily, Joyfully, Congruently, Passionately)
5. Write each affirmation in the present tense using a verb that ends in “-ing”
The purpose is to have you visualize what it would feel like to be in that scenario in your mind as if it were happening now in real life. This is a mental rehearsal to develop belief in yourself before you act into the world. This is the mental preparation that reinforces faith in a desired outcome.
6. Say each affirmation out loud with emotion at least twice daily.
The most ideal time for affirmations is first thing in the morning and as you go to bed at night. It is during these times that our subconscious is most impressionable.
If these affirmations are said consistently with emotion over a long period of time, you will naturally find yourself acting in line with those beliefs without any extraneous effort.
With that, Thank you very much for your time with me here today.
